우리말로는 '~이므로', '~때문에'라고 비슷한 것 같은데,

무슨 차이 일까요?

우선 문제 하나를 풀어 볼게요

이건 GMAT에 나온 문제인데요.(살짝 바꿈)

Sethairus 라는 영단어는 없는듯..

Sethairus are unusual forms of cancer                                                              not normally found in the organ in which the tumor appears.

영영사전의 정의는 거의 똑같다고 할 수 있죠.

그러면 무슨 차이 일까요?

 

 

because 는 '인과 관계'를 나타낼 때 쓰여요!

X because Y 이면, Y는 X의 원인이고 X는 Y이로 인한 결과를 의미해요

in that 은 '설명할 때'나 '제한적인 언급'을 할 때 쓰여요!

X in that Y 이면, Y는 X를 위한 설명이거나 문장을 Y 범위로 제한해 주는 역할을 해요.

아래의 예문을 통해 자세히 살펴볼게요

my approach differs from yours in that i am more aggressive. 

나의 접근은 너의 접근과 달라.

설명적: 여기서 접근 다른 점이 뭐나면 내가 더 공격적이라는 거야

제한적: 오직 내가 공격적이라는 점에서

나의 접근은 당신의 접근과 달라요. 여러 가지 접근 중에서 공격적인 점 때문에 (달라요)

-> 결국 당신의 공격적인 점 때문에 내 접근과 당신의 접근 사이에 차이가 생김

'암이 이나 뼈와 같은 세포로 이루어졌다는 것이' '암의 특별한 형태'를 야기한 것이 아니기 때문에 becuase를 쓰지 못해요. 그렇기 때문에 여기서는 설명하는 의미를 갖는 in that 이 정답이에요

사실 일상에서 두 가지를 구분하는 것은 쉽지 않아요!

 그리고 두 구분이 명확하지 않을 때도 있어요!
