★had better R(원형):

1. 의미(강한 표현-단순히 권유가 아닌 충고, 안 할 경우 부정적인 영향을 초래할 때)-should보다 강함

: ~해야 한다,~하는 편이 좋다(안 그럼 다침)

The democratic movement had better concentrate on the immediate issues of the economy and security.

 (민주주의 운동은 집중해야 한다/ 경제와 안보의 즉각적인 문제에)

2. 부정표현 

had better를 조동사(modal)로 생각하고 뒤에 not을 붙인다.

I’d better not leave my bag there. Someone might steal it.

 (나는 내 가방을 거기에 두면 안된다. 누군가 가방을 훔칠 것일지 모른다)

3. 의문문

had가 앞으로 나오고, 의미가 should 정도로 바뀐다.

 (우리가 택배원에게 쪽지를 남겨야 하니? 소포를 옆집에 두라고?)

※의무나 필수적인 것을 나타낼 때, had better을 사용하면 틀린다.

대신 have to나 must를 사용.

◎ It is better to do : ~하는 게 낫다(좋다)

It's much better to get a proper written agreement.

 (제대로 된 서면 계약을 하는 게 훨씻 낫다)

 (미안한 것보다 안전한 것이 항상 낫다- 어떤 행동을 취할 때 조심해야 된다는 말)

◎ It would be best to do: ~하는 게 낫다(좋다)

I think it would be best to speak to the people in the video shop to see what they recommend.

 (나는 생각한다/ 비디오 가게에서 사람들에게 말하는 것이 더 좋다고/ 그들이 추천하는 것을 확인하기 위해)

◎ It is better/ would be better if :~하는 게 낫다(좋다)

 (여기 너는 머무르는 편이 더 나을 꺼다)

◎ would be better ~ing

(지금 하고 있는 것보다) ~하는 편이 더 낫다.

 (왜 그는 그의 시간을 시를 공부하는 데 낭비하니? 그는 실질적인 사업 경험을 하는 게 나은데)
